Then he began to paint with charcoal and chalk. Layers and layers of painting with charcoal. Highlights with chalk. Some of the layers were smeared with the finger or a smudge tool. Some parts were left as is. The artist used to work for the Art Foundation at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1990 to 1991. He remembered that in some classes the instructors would advise deliberate strokes and confident strokes. Time is very important to the artist. He knows there is growth and he might as well document it as part of the process. What will the future hold. It's actually quite positive. The future is the point were we reflect on this day. Time travel is now. The artist has been talking to the poet. Both are struggling with words, images and what is the difference anyway. We are not making a contract here. The artist here loves when he gets surprised by a guest like a ghost. The ghost here is the face that appears in the swishy patterns. The patterns are based on something seen like a flag with stripes, a tree trunk or tree roots. These are things that connect and they create patterns. The point here is that in the swish there is freedom to build. The artist could easily give up on the the development of this drawing. He's staring offset from the corner of the the apartment. He's avoiding the window. He acknowledges that the window is there but there is a fixture in the middle of the adjacent wall that is dominating the installation. The fixture which resembles a box with simple legs could be a television. We don't know what it is. From this box emanates the abstract struggles of lines, focus, light, shadow and aggregate building blocks of the present. The room is otherwise sparsely furnished.
