The artist started with some square chains. Then he put down some words. He put in some circles and some spirals. Then he began to paint with charcoal and chalk. Layers and layers of painting with charcoal. Highlights with chalk.

Some of the layers were smeared with the finger or a smudge tool. Some parts were left as is. The artist used to work for the Art Foundation at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1990 to 1991. He remembered that in some classes the instructors would advise deliberate strokes and confident strokes. Never erase!
